Moto Maker's engraving feature won't be available at the launch of the Moto X

Moto Maker's engraving feature won't be available at the launch of the Moto X

Barely a few days before the retail launch of the Motorola Moto X, we found out that one of its key customization features will be missing. Customers will not be able to place their own messages on the device’s back when it launches this Friday.

According to a statement from Motorola, the quality of the engravings was not up to the manufacturer’s consumer product standards during testing. The company however, has vowed to fix the problem. It hopes to have the feature available in the near future.

The Moto X will hit the shelves as scheduled this week. While the initial lack of engraving will certainly be missed at launch, having 252 possible color combinations on tap still leaves plenty of room for individuality.

HTC planning a big Beats Audio event in London on October 6th

HTC planning a big Beats Audio event in London on October 6th, a new Beats phone is coming?

HTC’s next event is set on taking place on October 6th at the Roundhouse venue in England’s capital London. The slogan of the official invite is “Come feel every beat” and the new product announcements will be combines with a nice and loud party.

The expected handset in the spotlight will probably be the Sensation XL (previously rumored as Runnymede or Bass), sporting the Beats treatment. We previously had an encounter with its dual-core sibling the Sensation XE.

HTC have invited Dutch DJ Fedde le Grand, French DJ Martin Solveig and a “surprise headliner” (maybe Dr.Dre, aka Beats co-creator) and the event is open for everybody.

Here’s our previous rumor recap for the upcoming October 6th HTC event.

Microsoft releases Windows 8 Release Preview

Microsoft releases Windows 8 Release Preview

Just like we said yesterday, Microsoft has released the Windows 8 Release Preview on the stipulated date. As with the Consumer Preview, you can download the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant that analyzes your computer and provides a smaller download or you can download the full 32-bit or 64-bit ISO files.

Among the major changes in this new version includes a bunch of new apps that include Bing Travel, News and Sports apps, as well as Gaming and Music Xbox apps that integrate with your Zune pass. The Mail, Photos and People apps have also been updated. There are also some other minor performance and usability updates such as increased personalization options for the Start screen, improved multimonitor support, refinements to the way people find and download apps through the Windows Store, and new Family Safety features.

But by far the biggest addition is the presence of Adobe Flash in the Metro version of IE10. Now as you may know, Microsoft previously said that there won’t be any plugin support on the Metro version of IE, which included the Flash Player and since it was going to be the only browser available on the tablet version of Windows 8, that means no way to view Flash content on your device. In this Release Preview, however, Microsoft has added support for the Flash Player, but it is a bit different from what we have seen so far.

First of all, the Flash Player in IE10 is not a plugin, like we see on every other device that has Flash, but is actually built-into the browser. Secondly, and this one is more important, it is a highly stripped down version of the Flash Player, with features that are not useful on touch-based devices being removed. This means that you may be able to watch a Flash video on YouTube but you won’t be able to use things like the drop-down menus on websites that use Flash because these things are designed for a mouse pointer and don’t work well on a touchscreen. Lastly, Microsoft will maintain a list of websites and the Flash Player will only work on those particular websites. All of this is done purely in the interests of preserving battery life.

Microsoft will also be rolling out a Windows Upgrade Offer in 131 markets for consumers who purchase a Windows 7 PC between June 2, 2012 to January 31, 2013, who will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro when it comes out for just $14.99.

For now, you can download Windows 8 Release Preview from here.

iPad 4 gets torn apart

iPad 4 gets torn apart, so does the Kindle Fire HD

After the iPad mini and Microsoft Surface teardowns comes the time for iFixit to pry into the innards of the iPad 4 and Kindle Fire HD.

Apple’s latest full-sized tablet got a poor 2/10 repairability score (10 being the easiest to repair) while the Kindle Fire HD got 7/10.

Unlike the iPad 3 before it the iPad 4 doesn’t use a Samsung-made display panel and shifts to an LG-made one. iFixit also notes that Apple didin’t save any space by moving from a 30-pin connector to a Lightning one, which the team found disappointing. We also see the A6X chip, which comes with a quad-core GPU, meaning you get better graphic performance of what you’d get in an iPhone 5 or iPad 3.

The Kindle Fire HD’s BOM (bill of materials) is estimated at around $165, meaning Amazon doesn’t generate much profit off of the hardware given the price tag of $199. LG Display is a major player here too by producing the screen on the Kindle Fire HD. Texas Instrumentals is the supplier of the chipset while Samsung is accountable for the flash memory.

LG G2 for Verizon to feature exclusive wireless charging

LG G2 for Verizon to feature exclusive wireless charging

At the LG G2 announcement event, the company didn’t mention that its flagship will sport wireless charging, but as it turns out the CDMA edition available for Verizon customers will get to enjoy that.

On the promo page for the LG G2, the US carrier has pointed out that the smartphone will come with exclusive wireless charging functionality. More specifically, the wireless charging is using the Qi standard, which is shaping to be the most popular among smartphone manufacturers.

The LG G2 is based on a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU. It’s built around a 5.2″ IPS display of full HD resolution. The Korean variant of the LG G2 comes with a removable back cover (the international one doesn’t) and also sports a microSD card slot, but trades off battery capacity, featuring 2,610mAh versus 3,000mAh for the international model.

The smartphone is already up for pre-order in the UK for £468. It’s available in black and white color options.
