ASUS X101 ultra thin Meego netbook is up for pre-order, goes easy on your budget

In case you have been worrying about the future of Meego OS lately, we have some good news for you. The latest addition to the already impressive ASUS portfolio of netbooks, the X101 appears to have enough arguments to put the yet to become popular OS back to relevance.

As you have probably guessed already, the latest Eee PC will run Meego OS. The netbook will be powered by an Intel Atom CPU, clocked at 1.33GHz. There will be a gig of RAM on board, along with an 8GB SSD. The storage will be further expandable through a microSD card, as well as web storage, offered by ASUS. The rest of the netbook package includes a 10.1″ screen with 1024×600 resolution, Wi-Fi, 2 USB ports, and a battery which lasts 4 hours.

All this Meego goodness comes in a package, which is only .69 inches thin, and weighs 2 lbs (that’s less than a kilogram) – quite portable even for netbook standards. The ASUS X101 can be pre-ordered for a tad above $200 in Amazon.

Apple releases new iPhone ad

Apple releases new iPhone ad, highlights the camera on the phone

Apple has released a new TV ad for the iPhone. After a series of short ads that quickly ran through the various apps and features on the phone, the new ad takes a leisurely approach at showcasing just one feature of the phone: the camera.

Unlike Samsung, whose ads have now stopped making sense entirely, the new iPhone ad shows people actually using the phone. You can see people taking photos with the device in every day conditions, editing them on the phone and then sharing them.

The new ad brings back the class and charm of old Apple ads with the use of endearing and relatable scenarios and plays to the tune of a soft and beautiful piano piece. The ad ends with telling you that more photos are taken with the iPhone than any other camera, likely quoting the Flickr statistics that clearly show the iPhone as the top camera on the website (which includes other mobile phones and dedicated cameras).

The new ad is a clear improvement over some of Apple’s recent ads and light years ahead of what everyone else is doing (except for Google, who seems to be the only other technology company who knows how to do ads anymore). Hopefully, they’ll be releasing more of these soon.

Apple seeds iOS 5

Apple seeds iOS 5.1 Beta to developers, hints at two iPads and iPhone 5

Apple has just released the first beta version of the latest edition of their iOS mobile platform to all registered developers. Available for the iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS, the iPad and iPad 2 as well as the third and fourth-generation iPod touch devices, this is hardly the most major of updates.

iOS 5.1 focuses mostly on giving developers more APIs to work with and bugfixes. What might be more interesting to you than the update itself is the code of the new iOS release, which references three new iDevices.

iOS 5.1 mentions the yet unseen iPad 2,4 (which might be the Sprint version of the iPad 2) and iPad 3,3. The latter joins the previously referenced iPad 3,1 and 3,3, which will probably be the different versions next iPad, which should be announced in March 2012.

The iPhone 5 also makes a first appearance in the iOS code with version 5.1. Of course, we can’t give you any information about the specs of either of the upcoming devices at this point, but further details about them should start pouring in soon enough.

WhatsApp Messenger update brings Holo UI to the Android app

WhatsApp Messenger update brings Holo UI to the Android app

Popular instant messaging client WhatsApp has gone through a major UI redesign on Android. While the former version was nothing more than just a slight revision of the iOS app, the latest update takes advantage of the new Holo UI guidelines for Android.

Right off the bat you’ll be able to see that the menu bar on top is now flat and in line with the new UI guidelines. Drop into a conversation and you will find new flat message bubbles and a redesigned text input field. The emoticons have also been moved down and placed next to the text field, which makes them easier to access on smartphones with large displays. The Settings menu has also been redesigned.

Unfortunately, the new version of the app is not yet available through the Play Store, and you will have to click on the link below to download the APK from WhatsApp website. You can safely update the app with the new one and maintain all your current app data. There is also no beta sign anywhere, so the app should be stable enough for everyday use (I haven’t faced any issues with it yet).

If you are on Android and use WhatsApp Messenger regularly, you should definitely give the new update a try.

Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab goes on sale in the US for $349

Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab goes on sale in the US for $349.99, but it's not that hip anymore

It seems like over a year already, since the Galaxy Tab hit the shelves. Well, actually it’s been 6 months, which is a long time in gadget terms. Now the Galaxy Tab has been confirmed to hit the US market in its Wi-Fi-only version, from 349.99 bucks. It will be available on 10 April.

This reincarnation of Samsung’s proto tablet has gained some extra RAM – 592MB, but lost the GPS functionality, the HSDPA connectivity, the 32GB and 64GB storage options and some 2000 mAh worth of battery. It’s now down to just 4000, instead of the 6000 the original had. And the available built-in memory is 16GB. But you can always expand it up to 32GB with a SD card. It’s also stuck at Android Froyo 2.2, which certainly is not the latest tablet UI available.

This Galaxy Tab, model number P1010, has been available at Amazon UK for 299 quid since 23 March. And we go way back with the 3G version.

Coming so late, the Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi will have to face some fresh dual-core competition. The Acer ICONIA Tab A100 has the latest 3.0 Android version, powered by a much faster dual-core Tegra 2 processor and all this at the same price.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is another new slate to challenge the Galaxy Tab. It features an optional keyboard dock plus it runs on the Tegra 2 dual-core chipset and has a larger 10-inch screen with 1280x800px resolution.

All in all, the Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab is last year’s stuff and even at $350 it’s not really an attractive offer.

Entry level QWERTY-packing Samsung C3500 a

Entry level QWERTY-packing Samsung C3500 a.k.a. Ch@t 350 revealed

Samsung has just unveiled a new member of their feature phone family. The Samsug Ch@t 350 C3500 (now that’s a mouthful) is an entry level handset with a taste for messaging. It packs a side-sliding full QWERTY keyboard and runs on the Samsung proprietary TouchWiz platform.

The screen on that one is a 2.4” LCD of QVGA resolution, which isn’t exactly ideal, but it’s about what you could expect in this class. There’s no 3G or Wi-Fi on board, so you are left with EDGE for your data transfers. Bluetooth 2.1 and FM radio are included though.

You also get a 2MP camera, a nicroSD card slot (allowing you to increase the available storage by up to 8GB). And yes I know the 16mm-thick Samsung Ch@t 350 isn’t your dream handset, but when you are on a budget, you can’t have it all.

Next generation Xbox to be revealed on May 21

Next generation Xbox to be revealed on May 21

Xbox fans, mark your calendars. Microsoft has announced that they will be revealing the next generation Xbox console on May 21. This information was revealed through invites that were sent out to the press.

According to the invite, the event will take play at the Xbox campus in Redmond, Washington at 10:00 AM on May 21. There is a hashtag #XboxReveal if you want to keep a track of the event on Twitter.

The invite doesn’t say much without even a hint of what the name of the next Xbox would be, leave alone the design or the specifications. It is being said that along with the new console Microsoft would also be announcing the next generation model of the wildly popular Kinect accessory. We’ll have to wait and watch what Microsoft brings to the table, what games the console would have at launch and if they would be able to top what Sony has shown with the PS4 so far.

'Karateka Classic' for iOS and Android game review

'Karateka Classic' for iOS and Android game review

Last year we reviewed the new Karateka game on iOS. It was a remake of the 1984 game that was originally released for the Apple II. The original game has a cult following and although the 2012 remake was a decent effort it didn’t quite have the charm of the original.

Now Jordan Mechner, the developer who created the original game and worked on the remake, has released a port of the 1984 game for iOS and Android. Called Karateka Classic, the game is a blast from the past that lets you relive the classic gameplay on your modern smartphone or tablet. Let us take a closer look at it.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Karateka Classic is identical to the original. You play as an unnamed hero who is out to rescue Princess Mariko who is held hostage in Akumas fortress. In your journey, you fight several of Akumas henchmen, occasionally his trained hawk and finally, Akuma himself.

The developers have done an excellent job of modifying the controls for touchscreen. On the left you have buttons to move forward and backwards as well as a button to change stance from running to fighting. Those who played the original would know that you cannot fight until you assume the fighting stance and if you fail to do that even one hit from the opponent will instantly kill you. (Yeah, things were weird back then. Then again, these days you dont die even after absorbing a billion bullets.)

On the right side of the screen are the punching and kicking button. You can punch/kick straight, above or below.

As you play the game, you are constantly facing Akumas minions who get progressively harder to kill. You have to employ essentially the same tactics to kill all of them but the later ones absorb more hits and do more damage. Your health recovers slowly but so does that of the enemy. Also, your health carries forward into the next battle so have to keep that in mind.

One new addition in this version of the game is the swipe to resume feature. In the original, dying in a battle meant starting all over again, regardless of how close you were to victory. In this version, eventually you unlock the ability to recover after you die. You basically swipe on the screen and are taken back to the last fight you won. This does make the game a bit easier and lot less frustrating. You can always choose to not recover and start all over again if youre feeling particularly masochistic.

As a port, Karateka Classic is well executed and anyone who enjoyed the original would like the port as well. As a standalone game Karateka Classic is still fairly enjoyable as long as you dont mind the visuals and the sound.

Graphics and Sound

As mentioned before, Karateka Classic is a direct port of the original and thus looks identical. As such, the visuals arent exactly modern and if you arent a fan of classic video games then you are not going to be impressed especially after seeing some of the recent mobile games. Others, however, would be glad that the developers have managed to keep the visuals of the original intact.

The developers have actually gone a step ahead and given you the option to choose between CRT and LCD modes, the former being closer to what you might remember but the latter is definitely easier on the eyes. You can also change the screen color to green, amber or full color, which I think is a pointless addition.

In terms of sound, Karateka Classic borrows all the sound effects from the original 8-bit game. Once again, the developers have gone overboard and included mildly annoying floppy disc reading sounds for a more nostalgic feel but again I think the game could have done with it.

Verdict

Karateka Classic is a faithful reproduction of the original that gained so much love from the gaming community. The developers have done little to mess with the original and have actually improved it with new controls and a resume feature for when you die. Fans of the original are definitely going to love this one but even those new to the game should find it enjoyable.

Rating: 7.5/10
Pros: Faithful reproduction of the original, simply controls, challenging gameplay
Cons: Some of the visual and audio effects are over the top
